Denise (L) with client Marcel (R) at his IKEA job
In our new PI Up Close series, we’re shining a spotlight on the dedicated staff members who help make Project Independence’s mission come to life every day. From supporting independence to building meaningful connections in the community, our staff play a vital role in empowering the adults we serve.
In this edition, board member Dan Pittman asks Denise from our Independent Living Services team to talk about her work supporting adults with developmental disabilities as they build skills, confidence, and independence in their daily lives.
What is your title?
ILS
When did you begin working at PI?
I started in 2017 and worked for a year. I really missed it so I came back a year later
For me I just do what I love doing…I guess I don’t really see it as something I need motivation for, it is a way of life. I just can’t see myself doing anything else but this. I love the people that I’m with everyday. Most people can’t say that about their job!
What’s your favorite thing about working at PI? Watching my clients having fun. Also, I have formed lifelong relationships with many of my clients and their families. I feel honored to be given the opportunity to care for people in all aspects of their lives, from serious medical conditions to finding the perfect color socks. It’s all rewarding!
What are your favorite client successes?
Wow…so many! I had a client that was adamant about not socializing and this year he came to our Christmas bowling party. I have a client that really doesn’t express himself that often but this summer at the fair I took him to the discovery center and we touched the starfish and baby rays and he smiled so big! It brought tears to my eyes. I also have another client that I took to see Queen Nation the Queen tribute band. He danced and it was magical. I have clients that are making healthy meals and trying to be healthier. I have a marathon runner who has more dedication than most! I have watched someone who was on the verge of being a hoarder keep his apartment clutter free. I have a gal that has learned to knit and has made me a sweater and a blanket even after having polio and a stroke. But I feel like they all have success stories and I learn from them constantly.
What tips would you give to other people looking to work in your field?
Don’t ever put labels on people because we are all made in Gods image! Stop and listen because you will be amazed at what you can learn. Do not give up because just when you least expect it you will be rewarded. And lastly laugh out loud at yourself and with your clients, we all need that!
- They are no different from anyone else
- A little bit of love and patience goes a long way
- Learn from them…they have a lot to show you
