Recent Adventure – Outrigger Paddling

All that was needed was a rousing performance of the “Hawaii Five-O” theme music for the CBS television series Hawaii Five-O to complete the scene as Project Independence clients along with staff members climbed aboard the otuurigger, paddles in hand, and took to the waters in the #newportbeachbackbay to enjoy the Polynesian sport.
They did so safely since there are no special adaptations needed to the equipment. The outrigger paddling activity was arranged in conjunction with the @makapoaquatics that was founded in 2007 to meet the recreational needs of the blind community in Orange County and beyond.
The event was part of Project Independence‘s Access 2 Adventure Program that provides essential opportunities for social interaction, skill development, and community inclusion.
MAKAPO serves people of all ages and abilities, using their experiences with blind athletes to create inclusive, empowering paddling opportunities for a broader community, and continues to foster connection and joy through the sport of outrigger paddling.
