COSTA MESA…Nonprofit Project Independence (PI) board member and client Nick Westphalen of Costa Mesa has recently received the Self Advocate Award presented by Regional Center of Orange County (RCOC) at its annual Spotlight Awards.
According to RCOC, the Self Advocate award is for an “individual who has a developmental disability and who, through their personal or professional achievements, has brought a greater public awareness of and recognition to the abilities of all people with developmental disabilities in Orange County.”
RCOC has hosted the awards since 1997 to “recognize people and organizations who stand out as role models of selfless service and dedication in working with people with developmental disabilities.”
“I loved getting this award,” says Nick. “It was a wonderful experience. I love Project Independence because of the company I get from staff and joining the activities and events. I have met a lot of people that have enriched me with laughter and learning moments.”
Nick has been a PI client since 1998 where he receives help in developing his skills and confidence and is the first to declare that he’s always been a people person. While Nick enjoys the independence that comes with living in his own apartment, he finds time to mentor other PI clients. He enjoys his daily walks to Starbucks and the supermarket, where he greets the staff and customers with a broad smile.
“We are delighted that Nick was selected for this honor and having him on our volunteer Board where he helps keep all of the other directors connected with people our organization supports,” said PI CEO Robert Watson. “He is passionate about advocating for the rights and needs of people with intellectual disabilities and ensuring that we continue to provide high-quality and person-centered programs.”
For more than four decades, PI has a lifeline for one of the county’s most challenged populations. Eighty-seven cents of every dollar raised by the Costa Mesa-based organization goes directly to support vital programs for people with developmental disabilities.
